DESIGNSMARTS Helpful Hints on Exclaiming Your Style! COLOR Your World! by Kenneth Ross Hooper
With today's large homes and open floor plans, the question I am most often asked is how to use color in a house that has an open floor plan and one color would be to much. If you know how to look at a space from a designer’s viewpoint, you will see that there are natural “starting and stopping points” even though it is an open floorplan. In most cases there are perfect walls to use as accent walls of color. Selecting a wall with a fireplace or built-ins OR selecting two walls to lead your eye into the room is often a way to use color to define the space. For instance, in an area that is a nook for reading or gathering for a meal, you can use a darker color to define the space or even a soothing color tone might be appropriate. Another option for defining space is to paint the back panel sections of a major built-in such as a bookcase. not only will it help ton define space, the color can show off the trim work and help to give a backdrop to accessories displayed. Lastly, for those who really want to exclaim their style, one of my favorite methods of defining an open space is to use a combination of paint, wallpaper and faux-finishes working together in harmony throughout the room.

A frequent asked question with many of my clients is “ HOW DO I MAKE MY ROOM LOOK MORE COZY AND INVITING?” I tell them to look at the whole picture that is their "home life." What kind of "life" does your home need to support? Most clients quickly discover that they already know how make a room cozy and inviting according to their needs. Here are a few tips for everyone. (1) Wall color is your starting point for any well designed room. (2) Fabrics are extremely essential to obtain the look that a client desires. (3) In furniture placement you always need a focal to the room whether it maybe an architectural feature or a furniture piece or maybe even a wall of windows. (4) In placing the furniture you need to have a conversation area that one little detail makes a huge impact for people to feel welcome. Another thing to remember is that furniture does not need to be placed around the room against the walls this actually closes your room inwards. Floating furniture makes for an organized space. (5) Depending on the natural lighting of your space ambient lighting is critical for a well balanced room. (6) Area rugs are a nice detail to ground a room. (7) Window treatments are a wonderful addition for warmth, color, and a brilliant way to soften or make a dramatic impact to any room. (8) A touch of greenery adds a natural element of coziness and warmth. (9) Finally, your personal nick naks, wall art, photos, and other accessories complete the cozy and inviting aesthetic.
